reception

Hi everyone,

this is Jamie signing in. I just got the blog add xday and went through the posts today. I believe that we are going to have a nice time working together. Sorry I wasnt able to attend the meeting xday, I'm looking forward to joining in tomorrow at 3. I need help on the dreamweaver stuff, as I have no clue as to how I'm going to upload my stuff onto dreamweaver. I'd be verygrateful if someone could help me out.

You could send an email to my gmail account at misseffizy@gmail.com. We could meet before the meeting tomorrow. I think we have enough features for the first run, I'll work on the oscar piece for upper week, then we'd have pictures and details on who won what, who wore a disaster, who couldnt make it and all the juicy bits.

Take care and pls, who's going to volunteer to help me out with dreamweaver?

Copyright information

I have studied the copyright information on the websites of BBC and Guardian.

The Copyright section would go under the 'Terms and Conditions'.

In general, almost all the websites do not allow other (commercial) parties to quote or use their materials (photos, texts , everything appearing in the websites). In that sense, we can't use their stuff directly but we can paraphrase. It's very much similar to plagiarism.

Concerning the photos publishing, there's a website to register our photos (I have told Ariel). If you have your photos for your articles, the photo editor will add a tag 'some rights reserved' for your photos. We can use the photos from Flickr, but be careful and check out if there is any tag of 'Rights' or anything of such kind on their photos.

Here are the links of BBC and Guardian's 'Terms and Conditions':

http://browse.guardian.co.uk/search?search_target=%2Fsearch&fr=cb-guardian&search=copyright+guardian&N=

Some information to share,

Tan.

Another achievement...

To everyone
Flora did a commendable job by sending us a brief about the marketing and publicity plan for our website...It still has some pointers to be discussed and i will post a copy when it's finalised This is what all of you must start to think of as individuals to promote the website:
1) Where can we post our website links? Give a few posssible outlets which you might have in mind where we can sell/ advertise/publicise our website on Friday or maybe even on Thursday at 6:00 when we meet for the shoot!

2)The Design Team needs to work out that once we tell other websites to post our links on their sites they would look forward to their names/links on our site as well.....where will these links go...I think there should be some space allocated on the home page!!!

3) Design Team again: Where can we include links like email the article to friend, Links to related stories, contribution to interviews...does this need to be a seperate table on each of the pages or can all this go as some sort of a button...I'd suggest we can stop thinking of this for the moment (if at all this requires too much work that is...) and include them on the pages after the soft lauch to improve the look....suggestions...design team///

Who is doing what??

For the benefit of podcasters and the sub-editors(including the photo editor) who need to be prepared with what's coming their way for editing and for podcasting ideas as well. Here's a list under each category:
News:
7 top news stories and other less important ones making the total upto 12-15. So whoever wants to confirm if the top stories has something to do with the current story you might have to get in contact with the sub-editors before the friday meeting, only in case you need to give the current angle attached in your copy.
Priyancka Sathe, Jamie and Tan are the sub-editors. Ask them if need be what story have they selected for the day (just a suggestion)

Smogars bord:
1) Viviana: a piece on the Brazilian religion
2) Ariel: Gay culture in China
3) Sameera: American terrorist's execution/trial
4)Thabi: Sidelining journalism in South Africa
5)Tan: Spring festival in Vietnam
6)Flora: Spring festival in China

Features:
1) Max: Driverless car
2) Max: A piece on the new and upcoming technology(not sure what it is....Max could you elaborate in one of the comments)
3)Shashank: A piece on I-phone technology
4)Jamie: Oscar nominations and comparisons with last year. Here, Thabi I would like to suggest to hold oscars for the moment as there is still time for them....probably Jamie can write something on movies or party culture (lets ask if she can give us a piece on that? suggest ideas if you have any) I don't have her number and since she dsnt have a gmail id either i think it'd be better to get in touch with her on the mobile. My mobile number is 07727247114 in case she gets to read the post b4 we cn get in touch with her on the mobile....Can I get hers....or is there any other way to get in touch with her??? I think shashank needs to give her the blog rights asap!!
5) Priya: Inexpensive Indian Cuisine restaurant in Harrow town centre.
6)Thabi: A travel piece on Paris
7) Susha: F1 racing in Bahrain
Podcasts(those that have been decided so far)
1) Vox-pops on Bird Flu (Refer to Thabbi's comment on Viviana's post for more details)
2) A podcast about our our news meeting/(s) as a video piece
Designers please remember the templates are coming on Friday evening and everyone else please keep in touch with the podcasters if you want your story to be covered as a podcast as well!!
I guess that must be enough food for thought for today....Keep working and keep posting...

INTER-VIEWS' TEAM ( Note From Editor)

Hi Team Inter-View

First thing first, on behalf of the team I would like to warmly welcome Jamie our new sub-editor to team Inter-view. Her expertise in the print industry will be of beneficial to all of us. We welcome you Jamie and we're excited to have you as our new team member.

Right here are a few things that i would like to touch on today, they are as follows:

1) Thank you to the design team for coming up with such fantastic ideas and the input from the team also helped. Keep it up. To Shshank for a brilliant name that I believe Flora ( PR-Marketing Manager) loves and agrees with. I hope everyone is happy with the name and as you might know, the name will no longer carry the word NATIONAL in it - it is strictly - INTER-VIEWS. We will no longer discuss the name unless there is major problems from the powers high than all of us.

2) Thanks to Priya we now have our time-table/schedule set out for the next week, please follow, be on time, be ready with the work so we do not waste any time. If you have a problem and cannot make any of the stated meetings, please let Priya or myself or any of the team members that you will not be able to attend. Attendance is COMPULSORY.

3) Shashank has organised a photo shoot for us, please give suggestions on how you want the team to look like...we can choose the standard professional look of wearing black but that may not go with who we are so suggestions please...i have some ideas that i will post later on regarding the "about us" photo. Time is set for THURSDAY at 6...Please make note.

4) Presenters for the bulletin: Viviana, Susha ( they are the podacst Producers they should be the one to have a go first as they will be working more and more with podcast this time. we will all rotate news anchoring...should Viv or Susha need someone else to help with the anchoring please let me know and someone will be assigned)

5) The Logo, Shashank to please make up some logo's for us to look at but i know that the GLOBE seemed to be a favourite the last time. Please put in some suggestions everyone. Shashank perhaps a talk with the designers to come up with something...TEAM PLEASE SUGGEST LOGO"S...

6)Ariel wants to know who has pics for their stories and who has to source pics and who wants to make new pics...PLEASE LET HER KNOW ASAP...it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to tell ARIEL what you want in order for her to be able to HELP YOU!!!

- Thabi - Photo's for Paris ( I have and will put on a disk for you)

- Viv - needs a pics that represents religion...we can be abstract, think creatively...

- Max - car without driver - we have to source that off the Internet and find out if we need permission from their press office...

- Shashank - technology story - let ARIEL know if you can get press pics or if we will need to source them ASAP...

- Jamie - Oscars - we need a lot of sourcing for this piece. Ariel the Oscar piece is about the who's and who's of the Oscar's this year. try working with that for now. I would try and get pics of the nominated movies, their celebrities and the directors of the movies, pics of past Oscars, the Oscar statue, red carpet pics...this is a BIG OUTSOURCING lets start on this NOW!!!!.

- Susha - pics of the circuit F1 circuit, plus pics of a famous driver in Bahrain..think about your story and get the pic suggestions to Arie...

- Flora - transportation spring festival - Chinese

- Ariel - Gay people - we need couples etc...

Ariel please give resolution for pics to designers so they know how big the column for the pics should be...

7) Tan please do not forget to look at the copyright materials to present on Sunday to us..

8) Friday evening the 09 Feb at 6PM we will take a look at the SITE for the first time before Sunday so we know what it will look like. Meeting Compulsory...

9) Root folder has been created and the only ones who have access at the moment is myself and Priya. I will speak more about this on Sunday...

10) Please remember to give your stories TAG lines before you submit them on Sunday.

11) We have been given 50-100 words for our NEWS Pages and 600-800words per feature as per designers. So you have enough space to write as much as you want and as many photo's as you want...

12) Flora to please e-mail me the draft for the PR&Marketing before Sunday...

13)Importantly please respond appropriately on the blog, if you have any personal issues with someone, talk to them directly. This platform is for creative exchange and queries or requests or suggestions relating to the website, anything personal should not be included in here. Please do try and look at the blog as often as you can as a lot posting goes on while we do not have meetings.

This is all from me, work hard this coming week, i will see you all on Thursday for the photo shoot, I'm excited about that and i can't wait to see what the designers have for us on Friday and your stories on Sunday.

Thank you for the hard work, lets keep it up.

for now

ciao

T

PS: shashank i will e-mail you Jamie's address so we can link her to the blogpage...

Podcast material

Hi Guys,

I know you must be very busy with your stories and everything else. But as a Podcaster I need to know who is bringing to us (Susha and me) some audio or video for the next week. Who is doing a story, in which the audio is relevant? ou the images?
I need this material until Sunday, the same deadline that we have for the articles..
Please let me know what are u doing.

This is our plan to the first podcast + the audio and video from the stories

1. Audio Vox Pop
2. TV Vox Pop
3. Sunday Meeting (will be recorded, so, girls, be prepared)

Editor and Subs - Please help us to decide the Vox Pop topics. Here I have some suggestions: (we need two)

1. Bird Flu - Are you worried about that?
2. Iraq War (total number of killed is always increasing)
3. Global Warming - Are you doing something against climate change?

Please give me the feedback as soon as possible, we want to do this afternoon or tom.

See you!!! Beijos, besos and kisses

Pick ur Pic

Hey guys, I've noted down the stories we want to do.But so far I only know that Thabi wants to use her own pictures. If someone else want to use their own pictures too, pls let me know asap - u r more than welcomed to do that. ~_~

Cheers

Timetable for the week and Deadlines

This is the timeatble everyone needs to keep in mind so that we are able to put together the final template by Tuesday.
1) The editorial follow-up meeting where everyone comes back to us with a follow-up on their content (like the features and pieces for smorgasbord can be written by then for a few people) of the stories has been scheduled for Friday (10th Feburary) at 6:00 in library's Meeting Room 2.

2)
Then we will meeet on Sunday (12th Feb) in newroom 2 with final submissions (which includes your stories in templates and the pictures you want to carry with it). I don't mind if you're here at 10 in the morning or at 3:00 in the afternoon but I would need everything by 4:00 in the evening. This gives us a Monday to fall back on if there's something that goes boom on sunday because if we do not want to mess up on Monday and then come up on Tuesday with that mess for David to have a look at...!!!Åll i want us to do on Tuesday is improve upon whatever we have come up with till Monday.

3) Designers and edit team meets on Monday early morning in newroom 2 to edit the stories that have been submitted by the team on sunday.

Please read Thabi's entry for more detail and specific tasks that you need to finish and then if you have any queries please COMMENT on the particular entry itself.

The Plausibles!!!

Ok guys first things first
Anyone who needs to make a comment on whatever has been posted should do so in the comments at the end of the post. Now having small two liner posts makes for confusion and chaos.
Second
The photo session is going to be done on this Thursday. The time as for now is 6' o clock. I know Jamie is going to be out but she has said she would give in her profile shoot pictures so no worries on that account.
Third
The news bulletin which needs to be shot as soon as possible. So I would be quite glad if the top stories are decided and script is written so we can get he bulletin out in five takes or something.
Please understand that the bulletin needs to be edited and converted in a podcast. So Subs please get the bulletin together.
Fourth
The presenters need to be decided by Thabi... So can we get the two names then??
Also if a sports presenter is going to work separately then we can have three presenters... Edit decision...
Fifth
Pod casts are important. Please remember that any story you do make sure you try and get some kind of audio or video that you can. If you think a stand up helps get it done. If you think vox pops are required you need to have them with your story. The design of the website would fail if we dont have audio visual.
Sixth
Please give ideas for a logo... Inter (national) views.
This needs to be quick.
Many cheers
Lets kick ass...

About the name of our website

Firstly to make things clear. I DID vote on Sunday. Before that it was true that i didnt want to vote, just because i dont like any of the two names. later sb. told me that i had to vote for one of them and then i said syndicnews. The vote resulted a draw between the two options i think.

Good about Syndic news:
-- it has 'news' in it and thus make it easier for our audience to grasp at first glance what this website is about;

bad thing about syndic news:
-- it sounds more like business;
-- it should be a website with loads of articles covering all aspects of journalism, in other words, a real "sydicate", but , to be honest, we are not. maybe we are trying to make it come true in the near future.

As to globespeak, i just dont like it because it sounds serious to me. some of you guys think it is not serious -- maybe it is because of our different cultural background.

It was great that we had some new names popped up the other day -- a good result of the brainstorming. I like newsblend and newsnote better. The only thing that I am afraid of newsnote is that maybe it is too small. people will not take us seriously. as to newsblend, i cant find anything bad about it. we, people from different cultures, are doing news in different forms, covering different fields. it is a blend. this word is also easy to remember and maybe also trendy for young people.

We should let David know about our concerns about the name and his experience may shed some light on our thoughts.

Flora

Banners

Guys, these are the banners I drew yesterday. Hope u don't hate them. ^_^
it's not clear to see them at this small size. Should look better in their actual sizes.

the first banner: the hand suggests first hand info, hand prints are unique, our news is unique.
the 2nd banner: we r young journalists- rising sun; golden news value; in the dark, one can't see the news, u c news in the light- there's a shadowing "ic news" in the color of grey behind the yellow one; yellow is also the most penetrative color.
The 3rd banner: green and blue r for the word "globe".
the 4th one: just crap

Comments pls.

Folllow Up from Sundays Meeting - Posted By Thabi on 06 Feb

Hi Everyone

I want to thank all of you for attending Sunday's meeting and i have a great travel story on Paris with beautiful pics to go with it. So although I missed the meeting on Sunday i totally made up for it. Thank you to Priya for making sure the meeting happens and making sure that you cover everything that was on the agenda, thank you for getting everyone together and the minutes show that it was a productive afternoon. well done to everyone!!!

1) I want to know what Flora thinks of the name in terms of Publicity and marketing...and did we make sure that the name does not exist as yet on the net?? is everyone happy with it? i will speak to David regarding the name but at least for the moment you have something to work with, as long as everyone likes it??? Do i like it?? I will get back to you on that one...

2) I would like some details from the editors regarding how they will choose the news of the week. have they decided how many people will do it? three or two/ The meeting will be held with myself or priya for the final decision on the news of the week...

3) The banners are great, however they are not particularly exciting...they don't scream young and fresh, they scream BBC...perhaps a colour change and font change...i know Ariel is still working on them, please give her feedback so she can start working with every one's ideas...

4) designers when will i get to see the template for the homepage??? please let me know...

5) Susha i like your feature story on F1 ( green light) and Vivian's new craze religion, what is it about??? Priya when is everyone expected to bring forth their written pieces???/ please send the timetable...

6) These are my proposed stories: Le Paris Nouveau ( Travel feature), SABC Blacklisting journalists from On air interviews ( Smmorgasbord), this is what i have for now...plus my note from the editor which i will write ones i have read every one's work as to know that the issue is about etc...

7) Can all team members state on the blog what stories they are working on ASAP please...

8) Podcast - Shashank and myself have some footage that we have been taking during class - some guests lectures from our investigative class. we can take feature stories that are not current affairs from some of our old stories that might work. the podcast producers will have to listen to the recordings and decide on the quality and the stories...

I believe there is much to do this week, the sooner we hand in our stories, the less stress we will be when the deadline arises. it will be a tough 2 weeks and I'm here if anyone needs help with story ideas or anything...please post comments or queries on the blog as i check it regularly...

kind regards

T

To respond to Priya's comment, i don't think it is immature if we go through a little extra trouble and contemplation to decide upon the best name for our website. Even if we put forth 2 names to David, it is only because we seek his opinion and that doesnt mean that we will be under an obligation to follow what he picks. I was under the impression that Flora did not vote at all, as a result of which we settled on a tie, which is why the question of an opinion from David even arises! I may be wrong...if so please clarify...

Flora did you vote for syndic news for the name?
i dont understand the point on deciding the name of the website. i thot that in yesterdays meeting both globespeak and syndic news got equal votes and that thabi and david have to decide amongst those two... what happenend to globespeak? could priya or someone else please clarify this about the managing editors last post...

Sub Shashank!

Get out of the water, you submarine! Change the layout of our blog. quickly quickly quickly...

Minutes of the meeting Sunday Feburary 4, 2007

Agendas that were discussed in the Sunday meeting have been elaborated below...if anyone wants to have a look again or refresh something they are still confused about...
1) Name of the website: after much fret and fumes we finally have agreed upon Syndic News/News Syndic. Tabby and David to pitch in.
2) Six buttons on the navigation bar that read in bold below and what kind of content they might contain...
  • News: the seven top stories which are making rounds in the media industry, picked up from various news websites. These will be written in a way that even the person who hasn't read the newspapers through the week can make out what news did the person miss...from our website. These will be handled by the sub-editors for the first week(shashank, Priyancka Sathe and Tan will decide amongst themselves, if all three want to do it or only two will... My suggestion is only two should so the third can pitch in something else for either smorgasbord or maybe smthng else as well)
  • Beyond the News: This will contain an analysis on some or all of the top stories that have been reported through the week. It will be decided on Monday mornings (ususally) who will be doing these analytical short pieces.
  • Features: This will contain stories dealing with subjects like travel, entertainment, food etc. basically anything that is to do with soft subjects (hopefully, as i understand it). I might give a travel piece, Max had an idea to write about some technological bit (don't exactly rem but remember it ws a good one),Sameera also had a pitch in and Susha had the piece about F1 racing in Bahrain.
  • Smorgasbord: This will contain stories from one's country that do not have anything to do with news that is being delivered else where...it will have d cutting edge angle to it that only your piece has....A social commentary that could deal with two aspects (a) it could be a current affairs piece where a happening you know might be occuring now or might be expected to occur in the near future- something you might know about and therefore you can report it on the website. (b) it is to do only with where the person belongs to...so the piece can have depth in it because no one else except you will know of it! Viviana will write about a new religion that has sort of become a craze in Brazil, Flora and Ariel will come up with something from China and hopefully there'd be an interesting piece from either India or Vietnam if Tan, Shashank and Priyancka decide who is it that can leave the editing bit for now and concentrate on sub-editing and that news round-up that they have to come up with!!!
  • Podcasts: These will be assigned and selected by Susha and Viviana every Monday when the people from Broadcast team and others who have something particularly interesting for podcasting come up with ideas. For the first week if it gets too hectic we might consider ideas like reading out the news that we have on our website and giving a summary of all we have on our website, audio-video piece on one of the features that is going in a particular section could also be a good idea. Vox-pops about a certain piece that has aroused much controversy or stir amongst the readers could be considered for later times.
  • About us: This will have a link to the entire team's webpages and a point about whether the template pattern should remain the same or not has to reach a conclusion with David's suggestions.

3) The soft launch date has been fixed as Feburary 13th. So that gives us exactly 9 days and 8 nights to come up with whatever we have thought of...

4) The ROTA system will apply which means that everyone will work as per rotation; like if a person is giving a feature one week then the next week that person will hand in a story for Smorgasbord or would fill in the news for the week column.

5) We will have to come up with a formal idea on what we intend to write backing it up with research on either ...Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning so that everyone puts in effort for their bit/piece throught the week till sunday when tagged stories are handed over and a final look at it is taken on monday so soft launch can haapen on 13th (you see why i was getting so hyped up about the meetings and what needs to be discussed in each meeting).

6) The designers have started to work on the template hopefully they will come up with something that is worth David's notice (and help is sought on the difficult bit) on Tuesday, Feburary 6th. I don't want you guys to work overnite and come up with something final in such short time but lets hope to see something beyond the paper...perhaps on the computer screen...I'm willing to work my brains out on Dreamweaver on Monday if you need any help or are short of manpower....We already know how to make tables and key in text etc....so see if it's possible to work out smthng with these tables....Is it...i'm confused...enlighten please...

7) All will work thier a*& off to make the website rock...no matter how hot it might get during the meetings...

Cheers :)

Comments sought...n remember I'm just a phone call, e-mail or blog entry away...

Great job on Sunday!

We've done lots of work this sunday. So glad that everyone turned up. We deserve a big applause.

I know this website makes us so stressful most of the time and that could be a good excuse for the fact that we sometimes pour our stress on others. Though, I believe cooperation in harmony and enthusiasm is always better. The more we respect other members, the more efficient our work is. We still work with each other for quite a long time later, don't we?

Anyway, I believe we are a great team. We deserve an A for our work if we really put ourself into it.

See you all on Monday.

Rise and shine....

Com'on guys post responses or something on this blog...dnt make it luk redundant...enliven it with ur responses....from next time on no msgs on mobile...only blog to find out more...ok??

Meet at 2:00 on Sunday???

Most of us in the TV module were busy shooting on Friday and therefore the meeting on friday was cancelled. I had asked a few people on Tuesday if a meeting during the wekend would be a problem but as per the response I think it shouldnt be a big deal for must of us. Now, I know there might be people who wouldn't be able to make it but you always have this blog to express whatever you think of the idea and to say if you won't be able to come.
Please have a look at what the agenda of the meeting might be (look at Tabby's post below) and come up with inputs. Remember in the end it is a collective effort. Of coure it is understandable if you can't be make it but a post (as a comment or else as a new post) to let everyone know will be appreciated...
Hoping to see you all at 2:00 on Sunday in front of the library.
Have a nice wekend (I know u might be cursing me for making you work on a Sunday but sorry guys I had no other way out)...

I'm glad I'm a part of this team...All of you make such a nice team!!! Cheers...
~Priya~

Meeting and Agenda for the weekend

Hi Everyone

Seems as if technology has been playing a trick on me the last few days...couldn't log on to our blog...anyway everything is fine...Hope you're all well and ready for a much needed short break for the weekend...but before that, lets get to th important issues firt:

Meeting's Agenda:

1)Designers need to start on templates for Tuesday, we need to finalise template for the different "buttons" on the navigation bar. Do we have one that looks the same for all or do we have different ones. We need to discuss how the text will be layed out.... Basically the PAGES FOR ALL OUR CONTENT as well as the HOMPAGE template by TUESDAY...

2) Content ideas, i do not expect anyone to write anything this weekend, however suggestions of pieces you're interested in covering will be great so that we can go through them indepth on Monda. Remember, its our first issue so we perhaps need to work out pieces that can encampass that theme. Our first issue launches us, so please think about the sort of pieces you'll be pitching on Monday....

3)Name still outstanding, please give a thought to names we have suggested before unless you have a new one you would like to suggest...i have a few i would like to bounce off you guys...

4) colours from the designers and imput from the team...might be difficult as we have no name yet but we can have examples of what we like and don't like...

5) wrap up and next meeting will be monday at 11 in th emorning as there is a lot to cover next week...stories, templates, finalising time-table etc...

6) I will refine the concept again and present it to the team in our monday meeting for David, that's why our templates have to be ready as well...

7) Stil outstanding the picture editor - I would say for now the editorial team will handle pictures until further decisions has been made...we don't want anyone to be overloaded...

Priya will speak to all during the cause of the weekend for a possible meeting on Sunday as most are not available for a meeting today and I'm not available for Sunday afternoon but am hear in the evening so keep that in mind perhaps or have the meeting on Sunday afternoon when most people can make it...

For story suggestions i will post the green light on the blog on Sunday evening...

Have a good weekend...

Finally we are here!

Greetings to everyone in our group. Hope our website will be much more splendid than this page.

Who can change the layout and design of this blog? Sparkling texts on black is cool but really bad for our eyes.

Good night. :)
